Bluetooth DUN on Treo ... can't stand it anymore
So I've been using Bluetooth DUN on the Treo now for a few months now, since there's no Wi-Fi at the place I 'work', and I'm growing increasingly aggravated at the speed of this thing, or lack thereof.
Yes, I know that previously I reported some fantastic speed when I initially set it up, like 172kbps, and that was obviously pretty nice.
It's gotten progressively slower since then, and where I am right now, I get a whopping 32.9kbps.
This might have been fine in 1995 when I had a "pipeline.com" email address, but in today's world, this is not conducive to getting a whit of work done.
I've searched the web & treocentral for ideas on how to speed this up (my signal strength on the Sprint network is 3-4 bars, so it can't be that, can it?) ... nothing, except maybe a program called PDANet that allows Treo modem usage over a USB cable. Will have to get this and see if it works ... arrgh.

OK. Well, I got the trial version of PDANet, and now, using a USB cable instead of Bluetooth, my bandwidth is about 47kbps. Hey great maybe now each jpg will only take 2 minutes to load instead of 3.

Well I had a flash of inspiration and realized that leaving my IM client on (Trillian), which is continuously checking for events from AIM, Yahoo Messenger, & Googletalk, probably wasn't helping my bandwidth.
Turning off Trillian, my bandwidth with the USB connection went from 47kbps to 84.7kpbs!
Then I deleted all my Live Bookmarks from Firefox, as I reasoned that, with about 50 of those, it's probably eating some bandwidth having to check all those RSS feeds on a regular basis. After I did that, the speed went up a tiny bit more, to 94kbps, but I suspect that there will be less "sudden congestion" which used to occur seemingly out of nowhere.
94kpbs is still pretty anemic, but it's triple what I had before and there's a noticeable improvement. Nice!
By the way, I transferred all my RSS feeds to a program called FeedReader, which is open source (for Windows). What do you guys use?
